Construction Project Management Course

Our Fundamentals of Construction Project Management course is a 6-week program that will get you on your way in the construction industry.  

Led by Andrew McCoy, participants develop a detailed understanding of the fundamentals for a career in construction management. McCoy is the Preston and Catharine White Endowed Fellow and associate director of the Myers-Lawson School of Construction and director of the Virginia Center for Housing Research at Virginia Tech. He is also a professor of building construction in the Myers-Lawson School of Construction, a joint venture of the College of Engineering and the College of Architecture and Urban Studies.

Having successful completed this course, participants will be able to: 

  1. Understand the phases of construction project management and appropriate methods; 
  2. Define project activities, including production, procurement, administrative, and milestones. Activities will range from pre-construction planning to project close-out. 
  3. Analyze drawing document details and define relevant items for construction project management. 
  4. Apply estimating skills based on quality, quantity and cost of materials for a sample project or one of their choosing. 
  5. Apply scheduling activities and demonstrate logic (i.e. precedence of diagramming method or PDM) necessary for completion of the sample construction project. Apply cost-loading schedules. 
  6. Communicate project goals to a client/homeowner.

This course is also great for operations personnel, sales, marketing, and many other related positions to build an understanding of construction project management and what project managers do day-to-day.
